Tomlinson recently was awarded the National Portrait Gallery’s Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize 2020, and the talk focused on the body of work featured in the exhibition, ‘Lost Summer’. In addition to the critical acclaim for the exhibition, Tomlinson’s work was recently shortlisted for the Lucie Foundation Photo Book Prize. The talk explored Tomlinson’s practice, process and influences and discuss how the project ‘Lost Summer’ was born out of the Covid London lockdown in 2020. The talk was presented in partnership with Hackelbury Fine Art, London.
Alys Tomlinson and Sabina Jaskot-Gill
Alys Tomlinson (b. U.K., 1975, lives and works, London) studied photography at Central Saint Martins and recently completed an MA (Distinction) in Anthropology at SOAS, University of London. Her major body of work ‘Ex-Voto’ (2016-2018) explores Christian pilgrimage sites in Lourdes (France), Ballyvourney (Ireland) and Grabarka (Poland). She is currently working on ‘Vera’, a feature length documentary film, which focuses on one of the pilgrims whom she met in Grabarka.
Selected recent awards include: nominated for the Prix Elysée 2020-2022, Rencontres d’Arles New Discovery Award 2019, Shortlist & Public Prize Winner; Photographer of the Year Award at the 2018 Sony World Photography Awards; 1st Prize (Discovery Category) at the 2018 Sony World Photography Awards, Royal Photographic Society International Photography Exhibition 161, Silver Prize; Winner, Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2020.
Tomlinson will be in conversation with Dr Sabina Jaskot-Gill, Curator of Photographs at the National Portrait Gallery, London. Recent exhibitions she curated include Martin Parr (2019), John Stezaker (2019), Simon Frederick (2018), Siân Davey (2017), Thomas Ruff (2017), Akram Zaatari (2017) and the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize. Previously, Jaskot-Gill lectured on the history and theory of photography at Sotheby’s Institute of Art and has held positions at Tate, Autograph ABP and the University for the Creative Arts.
