In 2018, the National Gallery acquired a rare and recently discovered self-portrait by the renowned Baroque painter, Artemisia Gentileschi. This new national treasure is the springboard for the first major UK exhibition of Gentileschi’s work which opened on 3 October 2020.
Despite the many structural challenges and personal obstacles faced by this 17th century artist, Artemisia Gentileschi became an international success and one of the period’s greatest storytellers. In the recorded event, guest speaker Maria Mack D’Amario explores her life and work, and examines some of her most iconic paintings of Old Testament heroines, self-portraits and the mural work executed with her father at the Court of Charles I at Queen’s House.
Maria D’Amario is an art historian specializing in European decorative arts and the American Gilded Age. A graduate of Denison University (Ohio), Maria holds a post-graduate diploma in the History of Art from the University of Oxford, and a Masters in the Venetian Renaissance from the University of Warwick. Maria served as a trustee and steering committee member of the U.K. Friends of the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
