Gallery visit: Paula Rego and Celeste Dupuy-Spencer
27 September 2018 at 8:00 am - 10:00 am
Paula Rego (b.1935) draws widely from subjects including fairy tales, myths and folk art, her experiences growing up in Portugal under a fascist regime, and from her personal recollections of girlhood and adolescence have a strong influence in her practice. Paula is based in London and is celebrated as one of the leading female painters from the London Group. Many of you will have admired her work in Tate’s recent All Too Human exhibition, which dedicated a room to her work.
Celeste Dupuy-Spencer (b.1979) approaches subjects of collective trauma and identity politics in her work, in a truthful and startling manner. Celeste has captured international attention following her inclusion in the 2017 Whitney Biennial and as part of an exciting group of artists breaking the mould in LA and New York.
Both female painters capture a personal view of the world through images depicting contemporary concerns and cultures and provide a fantastic dialogue on painting through the female gaze.
