CLARE LEIGHTON (1898-1989) Wood-engravings from the Collection of Hilaire Belloc

The proofs were given by the artist to Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953) whose
‘Woodcuts – examples of the work of Clare Leighton …’ was published by Longmans, Green and Co, in London, New York and Toronto in 1930 and was instrumental in the international spread of her name. They were presumably selected because he particularly liked them or, and, Clare Leighton wanted him to have particular prints. The Gallery acquired them from a direct descendant of Belloc, unmounted and in a small folder.
