See a NMWA exhibition in Paris: Women House at Monnaie de Paris

16 January 2018 at 10:45 am - 12:00 pm

Bourgeois at Women House

Rarely do many of us living in Europe have a chance to see exhibitions at NMWA, so UK Friends of NMWA are popping over to Paris to catch Women House before it travels to NMWA in March 2018.

The exhibition:  Women House

Questions about a woman’s “place” resonate in our culture, and conventional ideas about the house as a feminine space persist. This new exhibition, a partnership between La Monnaie de Paris and the National Museum of Women in the Arts, is a sequel to the famous project called “Womanhouse,” developed in 1972 by Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro. Similar to their artistic foremothers in the 1970s, the global artists in Women House recast conventional ideas about the home through provocative photographs, videos, sculptures, and room-like installations built with materials ranging from felt to rubber bands. With themes ranging from “Desperate Housewife” to “Dollhouse,” Women House reveals the diversity of artists’ views on the home.

Women House brings together the work of 39 female artists, historic and contemporary, from all over the world.  Some of the names are already famous, including Louise Bourgeois, Niki de Saint Phalle, Mona Hatoum, Cindy Sherman, Rachel Whiteread, others are the subject of recent rediscoveries or from a younger generation such as Birgit Jürgenssen, Heidi Bucher, Joana Vasconcelos, and Nazgol Ansarinia.

Timing:

7:01 am: Eurostar for day trippers

10:45 am:  meet at the Monnaie de Paris for tour led by Camille Morineau, Director of Exhibitions and Collections of Monnaie de Paris, and curator of Women House.

1 pm: lunch at Semilla, a 10 minute walk from La Monnaie. Michelin Guide says: “a convivial atmosphere, trendy decor and, in the kitchens, a young and passionate team, who work exclusively with hand-picked suppliers. Delicious and well done!”

Afternoon: visit suggested exhibitions or “hit the sales”

Contribution: £20 Patrons, £30 Friends, £40 visitors plus approximately 40 Euros (TBC) for lunch.  We will write to you early January to request the additional payment in order to confirm the lunch reservation.
Please organise your own travel. Most of us are arriving the day before, otherwise the 7:01 am Eurostar is the last one that will get you to Paris in time to join the tour.
