A major retrospective exhibition devoted to the work of celebrated British artist Bridget Riley. The exhibition looks closely at the origins of Riley’s perceptual paintings and traces pivotal, decisive moments in her acclaimed career.  It features the artist’s iconic black-and-white paintings of the 1960s, early representational paintings, expansive canvases in colour and recent wall paintings, as well as studies and preparatory material.

During the 1930s, Dora Maar’s provocative photomontages became celebrated icons of surrealism. Her eye for the unusual also translated to her commercial photography, including fashion and advertising, as well as to her social documentary projects. In Europe’s increasingly fraught political climate, Maar signed her name to numerous left-wing manifestos – a radical gesture for a woman at that time. In middle and later life Maar withdrew from photography, concentrated on painting and found stimulation and solace in poetry, religion, and philosophy.  She returned to her darkroom…

Paula Rego: Obedience and Defiance is an ambitious retrospective of the Portuguese artist’s work that brings politics to the fore. Spanning Rego’s career from the 1960s through to 2012, the works in this exhibition address António de Oliveira Salazar’s fascist regime, the 1997 referendum on legalising abortion in Portugal, the invasion of Iraq in 2003 by the United States and its allies and, from 2009, female genital mutilation – all of which resonate strongly with contemporary feminist and political issues.…
