Mayfair Gallery Tour: Howardena Pindell and Deborah Roberts
18 June 2019 at 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
We will start at Victoria Miro where gallery director Paula Sankoff will guide us through the Howardena Pindell exhibition. Pindell is a black American painter and mixed media artist who addresses the intersecting issues of racism, feminism, violence, slavery and exploitation. An art curator, gallery owner and professor, Pindell was part of NMWA’s 2017 exhibition, “Magnetic Fields”. The current show focuses on her recent works as well as her large scale spray paintings from the ’70s.
Then, we will visit the Stephen Friedman gallery to see the work of Deborah Roberts. Roberts is acclaimed for he collages using photographs, magazine clippings, and images from the internet. Her unique visual language evokes African-American womanhood, exploring the subjects of beauty, identity and politics. The Anonymous Was a Woman award was presented to Roberts in December 2018, a prize granted each year to ten female artists over the age of 40 in the USA and at a critical juncture in their career.
This is the first time either Pindell or Roberts have had solo exhibitions in Europe.
