Mary Kelly & Fatoş Üstek at Frieze's "Social Work"

5 October 2018 at 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm

Curator Fatoş Üstek will be in conversation with artist Mary Kelly as we explore Frieze’s special section Social Work dedicated to women who challenged the art market.
This year the section will feature eight monographic presentations by women artists whose work emerged in response to the global social and political schisms of the 1980s and ’90s. Social Work pays homage to a selection of artists who challenged the status quo and explored the possibilities of political activism in their art making.
Fatoş Üstek is director of David Roberts Art Foundation, and previously worked as an independent writer and curator leading (among other exhibitions) Fig-2and Art Night.
Mary Kelly has been a pioneer of conceptual art and contributed extensively to the discourse of feminism and postmodernism.  Over the past five decades, Kelly has addressed questions of sexuality, identity and historical memory. Kelly first came to prominence with Post-Partum Document, a sociological study of the intersubjective relationship between mother and child. Exhibited in 1976 at the ICA in London, Kelly’s work proved scandalous for incorporating a selection of her son’s stained nappy liners within the installation.
We will tour the whole section, featuring the following participating artists and galleries:
ACA Galleries, New York & Weiss Berlin Faith Ringgold
Apalazzogallery, Brescia Sonia Boyce
England & Co., London Tina Keane
Pippy Houldsworth, London Mary Kelly
