Lynette Yiadom-Boakye @ British Art Show 8, Edinburgh
13 February 2016 - 8 May 2016
The figures in Lynette Yiadom-Boakye’s paintings are not real people, but composites drawn from the artist’s memory and imagination. She likes to work quickly, with each painting usually completed within the course of a day. Rather than aiming for formal perfection, she hopes to ‘make people intelligible through paint’.
Yiadom-Boakye’s paintings in British Art Show 8 provide glimpses into fictional worlds. As the artist comments, ‘I don’t want to fix a particular narrative behind the work but to instead leave behind a suggestion of one.’ Often, her paintings are conceived as part of a group. This is the case for these works, of which she comments that ‘looking, seeing and reading across them is something I really want to encourage.’
For British Art Show 8 in Edinburgh Lynette Yiadom-Boakye’s work will be exhibited at Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art
