Insight Talk: Women Muralists: SOLD OUT – wait list only

3 December 2014 at 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Do our ingrained stereotyped images of women as the weaker sex and men the mightier make us think that women could never paint large-scale images on walls and ceilings? Many women artists of the twentieth century have created outstanding murals; their work is seen while their names remain behind the scenery.
Alan Powers explores the creations of five talented contributors.   Phoebe Anna Traquair painted what has been called Edinburgh’s Sistine Chapel. Mythical and biblical pictures brought suffragist Mary Sargant Florence wide acclaim. Winifred Knight‘s work can be seen in Canterbury Cathedral. Mary Adshead’s first mural project was with Rex Whistler; she is applauded for her racing and jungle scenes. Mildred Eldridge is especially praised for her hospital commission, ‘The Dance of Life’.
Alan Powers was Professor of Architecture and Cultural History at the University of Greenwich until 2012. He specialises in art, architecture and design after 1900.  Powers is a trustee and former Chair of the Twentieth Century Society. His most recent publications include Eric Ravilious: Artist and Designer, Lund Humphries, 2013, and (with others) British Murals and Decorative Painting, 1920 – 1960, Sansom & Company, 2013.
Address: London, N1, details to follow with RSVP confirmation.
6.30 – 8.30 pm including wine and canapes after the talk.
