Caroline Achaintre @ British Art Show 8, Edinburgh
13 February 2016 - 8 May 2016
Caroline Achaintre likes to work with methods associated with the applied arts – including hand-tufting with wool and sculpting with clay – because of the ‘intense physical progression’ that they require, as well as their subjective quality. She is interested in what she calls ‘the uncomfortable middle-ground, the in-between’, and often chooses to work with materials – such as shaggy wool and glutinous clay – that have the ability to both attract and repulse.
For her wall-hangings and ceramic works in British Art Show 8, Achaintre draws on the tradition of carnival or tribal masks and experiments with what small amount of visual information is needed to conjure a face, emotion or character.
For British Art Show 8 in Edinburgh Caroline Achaintre’s work will be exhibited at Inverleith House, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
