Andrea Buttner @ British Art Show 8, Edinburgh
13 February 2016 - 8 May 2016
Andrea Büttner’s work often revolves around acts of reading or looking. While the artist has worked with film and produced digital prints, she more frequently makes use of simple materials or methods – such as woodcutting – that have fallen out of favour due to their association with craft or religion.
Büttner’s prints in British Art Show 8 stem from a close reading of Immanuel Kant’s Critique of the Power of Judgement (1790). The photographs, diagrams and drawings gathered together in these prints represent images or figures of speech employed by Kant in his theory of aesthetics. Sourced from books in Kant’s personal library, as well as Wikimedia and Flickr, Büttner’s diverse images attempt to unfold the philosopher’s argument in the manner of ‘a new layer of footnotes.’
For British Art Show 8 in Edinburgh Andrea Büttner’s work will be exhibited at Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
