Salon Series Talk: The Forgotten Women of Classical Music

23 November 2016 at 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

For the first Salon Seres of our new year, historian and Oxford lecturer Anna Beer will be taking us from 17th century Medici Florence to London during the Blitz as she  reveals  the hidden stores of eight remarkable women composers —  Francesca Caccini, Barbara Strozzi, Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, Marianna Martines, Fanny Hensel (née Mendelssohn), Clara Schumann, Lili Boulanger and Elizabeth Maconchy — who have been too long neglected.
Beer’s book – Sounds and Sweet Airs: The Forgotten Women of Classical Music, has received nothing but wonderful reviews from The Guardian to the Financial Times to The Wall Street Journal. Publishers Weekly writes: “Absorbing … [Beer] writes with rich detail and sympathetic insight about [these women’s] ambitious, adventurous battles to overcome barriers to creativity.”
Please join us for an entertaining evening of stories, music and song as Beer writes these women back into musical history.
There will be an opportunity to purchase a book and have it signed by Anna Beer.
Cost: £20 for Patrons, Friends, and guests.
RSVP to rsvp@UKFriendsofNMWA.org and post cheque to Box 539, 28 Old Brompton Road, London SW7 3SS.
